Presentation of MapBiomas Indonesia Collection 1 to the government agencies

September 2020 – The MapBiomas Indonesia team presented the land cover and land use results of Collection 1 to three government agencies. The aim of the presentations was to solicit inputs on the platform and how it could be used. The presentations and discussions were conducted via video conferencing due to Covid-19 precautions.

The three government agencies are the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), Executive Office of the President (KSP), and the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM). All three agencies are expected to be key potential users for the land cover and land use monitoring.

LAPAN provided technical comments on the use of data between Surface Reflectance (SR) and Top of Atmosphere (ToA) in Landsat images. LAPAN also shared knowledge on methods used for the development of maps based on satellite imagery. According to technical staff representing LAPAN, the integration of Indonesia’s Map Biomas could potentially be used as a thematic map in support of the Government of Indonesia’s One Map policy.

Representatives from KSP commented that it would be useful for the map to include land tenure boundaries and business permit locations. More detailed information related to business processes was also mentioned as a potential improvement for future collections.

BRGM noted that MapBiomas Indonesia Collection 1 should be compared with data produced by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) for verification purposes. This was particularly important for the mangrove class, according to BRGM staff, to ensure consistency in the understanding of what is included in that class.
