Exploring collaboration with the Faculty of Geography of Gadjah Mada University

Yogyakarta, 18 March 2025 — In a framework of strengthening MapBiomas Indonesia, in regard to both data quality and its congruity with academic principles, the MapBiomas Indonesia team met with Professor Projo Danoedoro in Yogyakarta on 18 March 2025. The meeting took place to explore the possibility of MapBiomas Indonesia collaborating with the Faculty of Geography at Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

The MapBiomas Indonesia team attending the meeting comprised Chris Barr (Woods & Wayside International), Timer Manurung, Dedy Sukmara, Wahyu Ananta Nugraha, Anggun Detrina Napitupulu and Cecilinia Tika Laura.

Prof. Projo, as he is usually called, is a lecturer in remote sensing at UGM’s Faculty of Geography. He is also Chair of the MapBiomas Indonesia Scientific Advisory Council (SAC).

He welcomed MapBiomas Indonesia’s idea to collaborate with Indonesian universities, including UGM. In addition to discussing potential collaboration in developing future MapBiomas Indonesia products, the possibility came to light that UGM’s Faculty of Geography could be made a venue for MapBiomas Indonesia technical team capacity development.

To follow up on the meeting, both parties agreed to discuss the technicalities of this potential collaboration further, including laying out details in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
